A common cause of pimples can be found in your regular diet. Fast foods, sugar, alcohol and dairy products can form access toxins which will then be forced out of your body through your skin.

Remember these Do’s and Dont’s

  • Keep your face clean, Whether or not you have acne, it’s important to wash your skin twice daily.

  • Watch what you put on your hair. Avoid using fragrances, oils, or gels on your hair. If they get on your face, they can block your skin’s pores and irritate your skin. Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner. Oily hair can add to the oil on your face, so wash your hair often, especially if you’re breaking out.

  • Avoid greasy food and junk food and add more fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains to your diet. Dairy products and foods high in processed sugar may trigger acne. Avoid these.

  • Moisturize. There are moisturizers made for oily, dry, or combination skin. Choose which moisturizer will suit your skin type.

  • Keep your hands off your face. Avoid touching your face or propping your cheek or chin on your hands. Not only can you spread bacteria, you can also irritate the already inflamed facial skin. Never pick or pop pimples with your fingers, as it can lead to infection and scarring.

  • Exercise daily. Regular exercise is good for your whole body, including your skin.

  • Use makeup sparingly. During a breakout, avoid wearing foundation, powder, or blush. If you do wear makeup, wash it off at the end of the day.

  • Chill! Some studies link stress with the severity of pimples or acne. Ask yourself what’s making you feel stressed. Then look for solutions.


Some foods help the healing process along, while some will slow down and interrupt the process. Its true that you are what you eat!. Here are a few foods to eat more of, and some to eat much less of.

Eggs, frittata, organic peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, rolled oats (not quick cooking oats), quinoa, avocados, wholegrain bread that is not mass produced and full of preservatives, rye bread, a healthy muesli that is not mass produced and full of sugar, fruit salad, nuts (unless allergic), white cheese (but only occasionally), seeds such as pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, chia etc, juicing (especially carrots that are rich on Vit A and good for the skin), coconuts (fresh or coconut water), organic cocoa, rooibos tea, replace sugar with raw honey, or xylitol.

Turkey, Chicken, fish, calamari, meat, avocado, egg, LOTS of salad, rice, quinoa, vegetables of every kind, baked or boiled potatoes, sweet potatoes, lentils, chick peas, gluten free pasta, tofu, miso soup.

Keep your intake of carbohydrates low and protein high with as much fresh fruit and vegetables as possible. Include cold pressed oils in your diet such as Flaxseed/linseed, avocado, olive, grapeseed, coconut etc.

Drink plenty of water to help the skin flush toxins and allow the kidneys to effectively eliminate these toxins. Add ginger, turmeric and cinnamon spices to your diet.

Processed/refined man-made foods – cereals, takeaways, pastries, sugar, dairy – unless organic and unpasteurized, fried foods, dairy (The culprit is hormones used to encourage growth in cows) fizzy drinks, fruit juices unless freshly squeezed, pasta (unless gluten free), processed meats such as ham and polony, alcohol, coffee, energy drinks, yellow cheese.

Though blocked, the gland keeps pumping out oil, providing a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The resulting inflammation causes redness, swelling and tenderness of the surrounding skin.
